What is the difference between Psychotherapy and other approaches?

Psychotherapy is a treatment that relies solely on psychological means in order to treat psychological, emotional or somatic difficulties people meet (these are often referred to as "talking therapies").

However, such therapies do differ from one another. To make things simple, counselling will offer support and advice on one particular issue while therapy will look into your ill-being, address your symptoms (Cognitive and behavioural therapy), or the origin of your ailments (psychodynamic therapy). Psychology will also look into any ill-being linked to mental health disorders or defficiency. Psychologists are very highly trained professionals who can assess most needs and define a complex treatment plan.

People seek help for a wide  variety of reasons. For example, they may go through a depressive episode, stress or anxiety states, insomnia, or food related issues, but also experience difficulties in their couple or within their family or in the workplace.

Usually, the client initially meets with the specialist once or twice to discuss the issues at hand and to envisage the best possible avenue of treatment. A treatment plan is then defined and discussed and the best way forward is agreed by the client. This entails the location of the delivery of services (East Kilbride or Central Glasgow - or elsewhere, or via webcam), the number of sessions (per week or month), and the fees.

Every person is unique and the reasons that lead the client to consult are so specific that there is no standard answer or treatment. That is why psychotherapy is a two way relationship where the person is progressively led to understand the origins of his or her difficulties in order to alleviate them.

How committed am I?

Once the treatment plan is discussed and agreed, the client is expected to attend all agreed sessions. However, should an appointment be impossible to attend by either the specialist or the client, a call of cancellation has to be made.
The client may cease treatment at any time and for any reason. However, it is always better  to attend a least a final session to discuss the reasons that lead to this in order to envisage the best way forward.

How does it actually work?

All first appointments will be held by the Head of the Consultancy so as to best assess your needs.

Psychotherapy is an ONLINE meeting via vebcam using Skype software (which can easily be downloaded here) . Sessions may be held weekly, twice weekly or monthly, depending on client's availability and depending on treatment progression and needs
.
Sessions may consist of:

  • once or twice weekly sessions (webcam)

This will depend on needs, requirements and such

The needs will be defined after the first evaluation and after the first meeting.

  • First send us an email explaining the issues at hand and what you expect from our input. Also give an idea of the best days and times you might be available plus where you live.
  • You will receive an email back advising you of an appointment. Depending on where you live and your wishes, this may be held in Glasgow or, more likely, via an ONLINE Skype connection.
  • Next, refer to the link on our site to open a PAYPAL account and use it to make your first payment.
  • The appointment will then be confirmed

Tariffs

The first evaluation (usually one-two sessions) is charged £ 50 each. The following 50 minute treatment sessions are charged according to the number of sessions, their location, the medium used, the payment method and the level of intervention.

Payments are made via bank transfer or via  in advance. Sessions must be paid and payment confirmed at least 48 hours prior to the session. Although no payment may be reimbursed, cancelled sessions will be reported/differed according to needs and availibility from the professional at least once. Otherwise, this session will be deemed as having been held.  PAYPAL

Confidentiality

Specialists respect their codes of deontology and conduct which they adhere to, and which bide them to the strictiest levels of confidentiality. All information disclosed within sessions is totally covered by the strictest levels of confidentiality within the respect of the Scottish law.

In brief, what's the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a psychoanalyst, a psychotherapist and a counsellor?

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised in psychiatry. They prescribe psychotropic medicines (medicines for the brain). They seek to deal with symptoms.

A Psychologist is a highly trained professional who trained and made a lot of research in various fields of psychology and who seeks to reach a formulation of issues at hand, be they of emotional or neurological origin. They offer various treatments accordingly. They can offer the widest range of therapies and treatments although they most often use CBT (see below).

Psychoanalysts have followed a psychoanalysis for years themselves. They offer treatment which mainly focuses on the uncunscious, on phenomena that are not immediately accessible to the individual. This approach relies on making sense of issues and experiences so that individuals come to understand the origin of their ailments and come to term with their lives.

A CBT therapist (Cognitive and Behavioural Therapist) is a professional person who offers focussed treatment options on specific problems you may experience. They will provide you with help on a particular topic such as a phobia, a fear you may experience, and such. They focus on the "how" you can deal with that one particular issue and not on the "why" all this is happening or other related issues.

A counsellor is a person who has often brief training (not validated or has chartered status), which is not professionally validated most of the time, and who aims at providing you with "advice" in the "here and now", which stems from their personal experience of life.

The title of "psychotherapist" or "Counsellor" is not protected at this time. Many people will call themselves "psychotherapists" and offer a wide range of services. Many of these are not validated and offer no protection as to their results. Many of these people do not have a recognised diploma. This is not the case within the Consultancy.
